CBSE board exam season: a month-by-month guide for parents
Board years feel long, but most of the pressure lands in a few predictable months. Here is how a typical CBSE Class 10 and Class 12 year runs, and where a tutor makes the biggest difference.
July–September: build the base
Finish each chapter as the school teaches it; don't let backlogs pile up.
Use NCERT textbooks as the core — most board questions are built on them.
If a subject is already shaky (often Maths or Science), this is the cheapest time to get a tutor: one or two sessions a week is usually enough.
October–December: first full revision and pre-boards
Schools usually run half-yearly or pre-board exams in this window. Treat them as practice, not verdicts.
Make a one-page summary sheet per chapter: formulas, definitions, diagrams.
CBSE typically releases the board date sheet around the end of the year. Put every paper on a family calendar.
January–February: practicals and sample papers
Practical exams, projects and internal assessment are usually completed before the theory papers.
Solve the official CBSE sample papers and marking schemes under timed conditions. They show exactly how marks are given.
A tutor is most useful now for checking written answers against the marking scheme, not for teaching new chapters.
February–April: the theory papers
Keep sleep and meals regular; last-minute all-nighters usually cost marks.
Between papers, revise from the summary sheets and past mistakes, not from scratch.
For Class 10, CBSE has announced a second, optional board exam window later in the year for students who want to improve. Check the current rules on cbse.gov.in before planning around it.
May onwards: results and next steps
Results are usually declared around May. Re-evaluation and verification windows open shortly after and are time-limited.
Class 10 families: subject choices for Class 11 matter more than the percentage. Talk to teachers before deciding.
When to look for a tutor
| Situation | What helps |
|---|---|
| Falling behind in one subject | Weekly subject tutor from early in the year |
| Understands concepts but loses marks | Answer-writing practice with sample papers (Jan–Feb) |
| Exam anxiety | Short timed tests at home, a calm routine, and talking to the school counsellor |
