How much should home tuition cost? A fair-fee guide for parents

Home Tuition Teachers Team·2 min read· 10 October 2026

There is no single "right" fee for tuition. Fees in the same city can differ several times over, and that is often justified. Here is how to judge whether a quote is fair.

What drives the fee

Class and exam: board-exam years, JEE/NEET and competitive exams cost more than primary classes.

Format: one-to-one home tuition costs the most; online one-to-one is usually lower (no travel); small batches are cheaper per student.

Experience and results: a tutor with years of results in your board and subject can reasonably charge more.

Travel: home tutors price in travel time. A tutor living close by can often charge less.

Hours: compare the cost per hour, not just the monthly figure.

How to compare quotes

1.

Ask each tutor for the same details: hours per week, length of each class, what happens if a class is missed, and how fees are paid.

2.

Convert everything to a per-hour figure.

3.

Book a free demo before agreeing — a good fit matters more than a small price difference.

4.

Agree the fee in writing (a message is fine) and pay monthly, never months in advance to someone you have just met.

Fee ranges on Home Tuition Teachers

When at least five real tutors in a city list a fee for a subject, Home Tuition Teachers shows the typical range (the middle half of tutors) next to search results and on each city's fee page. We hide the range when there isn't enough data, so it is never based on one or two profiles.
