JEE Main, JEE Advanced and NEET UG: a preparation timeline for Class 11 and 12

Home Tuition Teachers Team·2 min read· 10 October 2026

JEE and NEET reward steady work over two years far more than a final sprint. Here is how the exams are usually organised and a plan that fits around school.

How the exams are usually organised

JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), normally in two sessions — one around January and one around April. Students may attempt both; the better score counts.

JEE Advanced is conducted by one of the IITs, usually in May or June, and only top JEE Main performers are eligible.

NEET UG is conducted by NTA, usually once a year in early May, as a pen-and-paper test covering Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Class 11: build concepts (most important year)

Class 11 topics make up a large share of both exams. Gaps here are the hardest to fix later.

Aim for one concept chapter per subject every two to three weeks, with practice questions the same week.

Keep a mistakes notebook from day one.

Summer before Class 12: consolidate

Revise all Class 11 chapters and take one full-length mock test a week.

Identify the three weakest chapters per subject and fix them now.

Class 12, April–November: finish the syllabus

Balance board preparation with entrance practice — NCERT is the base for both, especially for NEET Biology and Chemistry.

Move to two mock tests a week by October. Review every test for longer than you spent taking it.

December to the exam: test and revise

Full-length tests in exam conditions, at the same time of day as the real paper.

Revise from your own notes and mistakes notebook, not new books.

Protect sleep. Tired students make careless errors.

Coaching, tutor, or both?

Coaching institutes give structure, regular tests and a peer group.

A personal tutor is best for fixing specific weak chapters or doubts that pile up in a large batch.

Many families combine a coaching programme with a few hours a week of one-to-one help in the weakest subject.

You can compare coaching centres and individual tutors on Home Tuition Teachers, book a free demo, and check reviews from other families before deciding.
